
Brigadier General Pia Romero
New Mexico Director of Joint Staff
Brigadier General Pia G. Romero has served in the New Mexico National Guard for over 28 years and previously served in the United States Army Reserves for 10 years. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Administration from the College of Santa Fe and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from The University of New Mexico. Brigadier General Romero also graduated from Basic and Advanced Individual Training, the Ordnance Officer Basic Course, Ordnance Officer Advanced Course, the Command and General Staff College, the Support Operations Course, the Army Force Management Course, and the U.S. Army War College Fellowship at Texas A&M University.
Her prior assignments include Maintenance Platoon Leader and Maintenance Control Officer for Detachment 1, 3631st Maintenance Company; Supply and Services Officer for the 515th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion; and Petroleum Officer the 804th Quartermaster Battalion (POL). Colonel Romero was selected to be the Company Commander of the 1115th Transportation Company in November 2002 and served in that capacity through December 2005. She has also served as the Executive Officer for the 717th Brigade Support Battalion and has held several staff positions in the New Mexico Joint Forces Headquarters including that of Selective Service Officer, Operations Branch Chief, and Training Division Chief. Brigadier General Romero’s most recent assignments include Battalion Commander of the 615th Transportation Battalion, and Deputy Commander and Commander of the 111th Sustainment Brigade.
Brigadier General Romero deployed to Taji, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004. Additionally, she has served in several key positions in the National Guard during catastrophic event responses such as Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Gustav; as well as the Cerro Grande, Encebado, Las Conchas, Little Bear, the Calf Canyon/Hermits Peak Wildfires, and the South Fork and Salt Fires. Colonel Romero also served as a Senior Strategic Officer and Joint Interagency Officer at the National Guard Bureau’s Domestic Operations/Force Developments (NG-J3/7) Future Operations Division (NG-J355) in 2013 and 2016, respectively. In 2019, Brigadier General Romero served as the Joint Task Force’s Officer in Charge during the COVID-19 response.
Brigadier General Romero currently serves as the Director of the Joint Staff as a Federal Technician and the Chief of the Joint Staff in the New Mexico National Guard. Along with her National Guard duties, she is a Certified Federal Contracts Manager and retired from Triad National Security, LLC, where she served as a Prime Contract Analyst.
